Olympic Flame S.C. Ares - Finalists at 2017 Frank Sobil Spring Classic!
May 17, 2017
On the May 13th and 14th Ares participated in the 2017 Frank Sobil Spring Classic soccer tournament. The boys participated in the U14 age group consisting of 28 teams. Ares played at the highest level in the top division (Top Flight) consisting of 8 elite competitive teams from the top leagues across Ontario and Quebec. Competition was fierce, and Ares was more than up to the task.
Ares came out of the group stage with a perfect undefeated recorded as absolute point leaders and managed to have both the highest goals-for, and fewest goals-against. The team continued undefeated through to the final, winning its semifinal, only to concede in the Championship game and finished as tournament finalists and runners-up.
Ares’ overall performance was outstanding, finishing the tournament with the best overall points and goals-for records in the Top Flight U14 Boys Division, a championship worthy effort.
In the final championship game the boys played through tremendous winds, the average wind speed during the game was 35 kph, with gusts to 48 kph. The ball would not stay put for set plays, corner flags would not remain standing, eyes were watering, even the goals were being blown off the line. In the end, Ares’ opponents better capitalized on the severe weather conditions and came away with a 3-1 victory, Ares’ only loss of the tournament.
