Ares travelled to Peterborough this Father’s Day weekend to participate in the Peterborough Challenge Cup Tournament. The team put together a great run at the tournament, and put on a fantastic show of teamwork. Each and every player elevated his game to the highest level we have seen. The boys showed off terrific and advanced passing and attacking soccer, and a stifling defence allowing very few chances. Ares was able to dictate the pace of each game from the opening whistle and finished the round robin portion of the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record, defeating Kingston 3-0, Brantford 2-1 and Belleville 2-1.
Ares met Georgetown in the semi-final and comfortably earned a 2-0 victory, to move into the finals, where unbeaten Ares met an unbeaten Markham for the championship. Markham came out fast and hard, but it was “Ares” who broke through first for the 1-0 lead, followed by a second goal in the second half to go up 2-0. Markham pulled one back with a very late goal, but Ares saw the game through to take the win with a final 2-1 for score. After five grueling matches in the searing 30+ degree heat and humidity Ares claimed another tournament championship!
Ares” was solid from top to bottom, with balanced scoring up front, and only three goals conceded in five matches. Great job by all the boys both defensively and offensively.
Congratulations to the players and coaching staff for putting everything into the tournament and coming out champs in their first tournament of 2016.
